I was about 10 years old, and I remember my grandmother had an old Singer sewing machine in her den. I took it out one day, I plugged it up, and stepped on the peddle. At that point, I fell in love with the sound of the machine. I played with it and tried to sew without having any idea what I was doing. I asked her to show me how to work the machine, she went over the basics of the machine and told me that we would make a trip to the fabric store when she has time and start a project. Needless to say, that never happened, but I still would play around with the machine until I made it up in my mind that I will learn how to use this one day.
After 30+ years, that day came, while on YouTube, I stumbled upon a young lady by the name of Mimi G. I watch all her videos and was amazed on how she was able to teach the basics in layman’s terms. She would show you how to do things step by step and I was in love again. I went to Joann’s fabric store and purchased everything I needed including a machine. I was ready to sew! I was so excited to learn how to make something from scratch (without a pattern). I was excited about choosing fabric and creating something. In my creative mind, life was good.
The first thing that I chose to make was a circle skirt. It was relatively easy. And it made me brush up on my math skills. Lol Photo below is the very first skirt that I made. I was very proud of this. And to this day almost every skirt I wear is one I have sewn.
It is never too late to learn something new. Or considering learning something that you always wanted to do one day. I have received many compliments in regard to my fabric choice. As a result, I have decided to sell fabric beautiful fabric pieces that will be coming soon!
